Das Irish Library Council hat am 25. August den Bericht “The Public Library and the School: Policies and Prospects for Library Services to Primary Schools in Ireland” veröffentlicht. Das Dokument ist das Ergebnis eines umfangreichen Rechercheprojektes, an dem die bibliothekarischen Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus Stadt- und Kreisbibliotheken sowie Schulleiter/innen und Lehrkräfte aus Kerry, Wicklow, Dublin und Wexford teilgenommen haben.
Ziel des Berichtes war es, die bestehenden Bibliotheksservices für Grundschulen zu untersuchen und Wege zur Verbesserung aufzuzeigen. Der Report schließt mit einer umfangreichen Analyse und Empfehlungen, daraus hier ein paar Zitate:
- „The Schools Library Service (SLS) as delivered by the public library service internationally is a core element within education provision.“
- „Provision of school library services to primary education in the Republic of Ireland is in line with international practice, in so far as public libraries are an integral partner with education and other bodies, regardless of the delivery model adopted.“
- „There is currently no joint national policy on a SLS in the Republic of Ireland, although through its funding support for the SLS from 1971 to 2008 inclusive, the DES [Department of Education and Science, d. Verf.] has recognised the need for provision of a library service to schools.“
- „A national SLS policy should clearly define the role of the public library system in supporting primary and secondary education and would require joint coordination at policy and senior levels […]“
