Die Helsinki City Library ist erneut ausgezeichnet worden: Neben dem Finnish Quality Award in der Kategorie „Public Sector and Non-Profit Communities“ erhielt sie außerdem noch für die Filiale „Library 10“ den Preis „Quality Innovation of the Year„. Die Bibliothek hatte bereits im Jahr 2000 den „Access to Learning Award“ der Bill und Melinda Gates Foundation erhalten. Wer die Bibliotheksleiterin Maija Berndtson und ihr Team kennt, kann sich nur in die Reihe der Gratulanten einreihen – in der finnischen Hauptstadt wird Bibliotheksarbeit mit Weltklasse-Status geleistet und außerdem findet man dort viele freundliche, weltoffene Kolleginnen und Kollegen!

Helsinki City Library has won the Finnish Quality Award 2008 in the category for the public sector and non-profit communities. The city library unit, Library 10, in turn, rose to first place in the Quality Innovation of the Year competition.
The awards were given out on 13 November in the award ceremony held in Helsinki. The library was also granted the 5 star Recognised for Excellence merit by EFQM.
The personnel is listened to and respected
The Helsinki City Library was evaluated to be a 501–550 point organisation. It received its best marks in the areas of leadership and partnerships. The jury felt that the particular strengths of the library were its active, innovative and customer-oriented operations, and the constant development of its products and services.
According to the evaluation, one of the best qualities of the library is also the administration, which respects the personnel, listens to them and values their professional skill. The commitment and enthusiasm the personnel show towards the library’s operations and their development is a testament to the success of the administration’s determined efforts. The administration has also shown excellence in systematically bringing their vision and strategy to reality.
The library has received many awards and merits even prior to this since the 1990s: for example, in 2000 the library was granted the Access to Learning award and a million dollars from the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, and in 2004 the library won the Mayor’s quality award.
„Finnish people appreciate the public library a great deal. It is an honour to us to provide our customers with high-quality library services,“ says Library Director Maija Berndtson. „We are especially proud of the fact that the city library was the third ever to receive the award in the public sector category,“ she adds. „It feels great that our diverse development work, which has continued for years, is deemed worthy of recognition.“
The concept of the Library 10 unit is one of its kind in the world
The Library 10 unit was awarded the first prize in the Quality Innovation of the Year competition. In the category for public communities two awards were given out. As one of the reasons for their decision the jury stated that the library has recognised the changes the world has gone through and has met the challenges posed by the change with extremely modern methods, which have yielded excellent results.
